9S can do everything 2B can do, and more. despite having only one attack button, he has a full range of both light and heavy attacks. Not even close. He’s like 2B with one hand tied behind her back. You need a custom chip loadout to get anything interesting from him but even then, he doesn’t compare. 9S is the one who undergoes a significant character arc. A2 goes through one as well, but it's less pronounced as she only became a main character very late into the game and most of her backstory is explained through easily missable text in an inconspicuous location. 9S is also the one who shares some similarities with the previous games protagonist, Nier, in …NieR: Automata. No, I think you're absolutely right. I think Nier Automata is a very tragic story about love, and not just the romantic kind. I don't think 9S hates anything more than the people who built him. 2B reflects on this in the beginning - what starts as a bit of a meta joke about dying in the prologue is really a Nietzsche-esque philosophy, that our gods are cruel for putting us in a life like this.

Nier Automata's combat is very easy to cheese with certain combinations of chips, which I feel is the largest reason why some people complain about how boring the combat was. It's not even particularly difficult to make yourself completely immortal. Doing so will, of course, make combat mind-numbingly boring.
